Simplicity Begets Beauty: What is your inspiration?
“Beauty of style and harmony and grace and good rhythm depend on simplicity.”
-Plato
A wise man. While placing the finishing touches on a nook in our home that was slowly becoming overrun with magazines (more on that next week), I was reminded today of how something very simple can create magnificent beauty, both in form and function. Andy and I wanted to add a sense of lightness to our newly refurbished area. And I’ve been yearning to add more plant life to our space, but sadly, I carry the black thumb of death when it comes to plants. We wanted something organic, something weightless, and something requiring virtually no care. Inspired by the sun peering through a glass on the counter, I knew exactly what the space needed: a Tillandsia. A what?
From Latin America, Tillandsias are gorgeous, sculptural plants. They are one of the world’s only true air plants – yep – air plants. Their leaves trap water in the air for nourishment. No roots. No soil. Simply mist 1-3 times per week and let dry. Amazing. This not only looks like a living work of art, it is also incredibly simple to maintain. Not to mention: an inspirational reminder to keep things simple. Always. Find your inspiration for simplicity and make it a part of your space.
